Edge locations are AWS data centers designed to deliver services with the lowest latency possible.

Suppose you work for a company that requires assignments in remote locations, with the need for 24/7 uptime for internet, digital television, telecommunications and more. With traditional data centres in fixed locations, the further away, mean increased latency issues which effected customer experiences that could impact performance of applications that are critical to your business.

From business to gaming, to interactive fitness and examples than span across industries and more in the future with IoT, having zero latency is key for customer experiences and retention in any industry.

With that in mind, even with caching of content, serving static assets, streaming video and web surfing are all impacted the further from the data centre you are.

AWS Edge Locations are spread across 47 countries with 225 locations, with two tiers of locations to provider even greater coverage. Together, with data centres and local zones, you can ensure any application you serve delivers the same experience in a major city or the most remote locations. From running dependent services to code directly in these locations, will ensure responses are fast and snappy.

For example, India has one regional edge cache in Mumbai, and 21 edge POPs spread across the country. If a user in New Delhi visits a site, CloudFront will first try the cache in their nearest edge point of presence (a mini data centre), then the cache in the Mumbai Regional Edge Cache; only if that doesn’t work will it go back to the origin server.

The best part about it, for the services you would need to deliver content, you are automatically using these managed services and reaping the benefits. Better yet, rest assured that much of the digital content served to you is probabally running through these data centres.
